What Makes Our School Unique?
The mission of the McCann Alternative Learning Center is to intervene positively with students who are currently not succeeding in a traditional school environment. The McCann experience can be a new beginning for a student. By learning to take responsibility for their own behavior, getting along with others and staying on task until they have completed their goal, students have an opportunity to leave McCann with the skills necessary for success in the regular school setting and the greater society. Our goal is to counsel with students about appropriate school behaviors and social interactions with peers and teachers. Students will meet weekly with a counselor to discuss anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, and decision making skills, etc. We will link community resources with our students and their families to provide any additional support services that are needed. We are here to help students succeed and take more responsibility for their conduct at school. When students exit the program and return to their regular school of zone, we know that our program will impact them greatly. Our school is unique because we have the opportunity to interact with students that are very intelligent but somewhat unfocused. We plan and implement programs that encourage appropriate skills for school; we raise the level of performance, and help the student reduce negative interaction in the school setting. This year, we have encouraged students to raise their TCAP scores to proficient and advanced. We have provided the instruction, technology, and support for them to succeed.

What Does Our School Offer?
-
In the alternative school environment we will provide curricula, counseling, and resources to enable the student to master life skills that are critical to social, emotional, and academic growth and success. We will establish collaborative partnerships in a system of shared responsibility for program support and services. We offer an effective system of positive student management and utilize innovative teaching strategies. An effective transition process for students entering and exiting the program is also currently in place.
-
By providing students with a variety of teaching strategies, we can improve their academic achievement for No Child Left Behind rating of student success. Student assessment used to promote excellence in education will vary. Many of our students are proficient in the four basic subject areas before leaving our program.
