What Makes Our School Unique?
The faculty and administration of Hume-Fogg are dedicated to providing a challenging college preparatory program for the academically talented and diverse public school community we serve. Hume-Fogg is committed to maximizing individual potential through hard work and personal responsibility. Cornerstones of the program are the development of integrity, decision-making and critical thinking skills, and in-depth pursuit of academic interests.
Hume-Fogg High School, Nashville’s first public school, was founded in 1912. In 1983, it became Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School, the first secondary magnet school to serve Nashville’s academically talented students. The program provides high academic standards through challenging honors-level coursework, based on the assumption that graduates will pursue post-secondary education.
The 860 students attending Hume-Fogg were selected county-wide from students with total reading and mathematics stanine scores in the advanced category and an academic grade point average of at least 85 (B) with no failing grades.

What Does Our School Offer?
All Hume-Fogg courses are either honors or advanced placement level, with the exception of physical education. All classes emphasize writing and critical thinking and analysis. Students are required to take 6 courses per semester and must accumulate no fewer than 22 credits. Hume-Fogg offers two interdisciplinary courses - World Studies and American Studies - which combine the English and History requirements for sophomores and juniors. In addition to the state requirements for graduation, Hume-Fogg students are strongly encouraged to take 4 years of math, science and foreign language. Every student must complete pre-calculus and physics. The Hume-Fogg curriculum promotes a balance between the purely academic and creative arts. Students also participate in athletics, service organizations, and academic competitions.
Who Attends Our School?
The students attending Hume-Fogg were selected via a county-wide lottery from students with total reading and mathematics stanine scores in the advanced category and an academic grade point average of at least 85 (B) with no failing grades. Students attending Meigs Magnet and have maintained the proper standards automatically feed into Hume-Fogg.
PENCIL Partners
PENCIL Foundation, a nonprofit organization, links community resources with Nashville public schools. A PENCIL Partner is a business or other community organization that teams up with a Metro school to volunteer time and donate resources that promote student success.
