Tell about some exciting things that your class has done this year, or things that you plan to do before the end of the year.

Kindergarten classes in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools receive Science Kits that are fun and hands on for the children. We just finished learning about fish, worms and insects. Our next unit of study will be about growing things.

Tell about any ongoing professional development or continued education you have been working on this year. (Graduate work, Covey, new certification, etc….)

Each teacher receives five days for continued education. This year I have attended workshops on Science Kits, Covey Training and Balanced Literacy.

Where did you attend school, what was your major?

I attended school at Middle Tennessee State University and received a degree in Management with minors in Psychology and English. I returned to school in 1995 and received certification in Education: Kindergarten – Eight Grade.

Do you have a higher degree? How many years do you have? (Masters, +30, Dr…)

I have 21 hours towards a Masters.

What made you decide to teach Kindergarten?

I love teaching children to read, and in today’s classrooms children learn to read in Kindergarten.

What is you favorite color?

My favorite color is green.

What is your favorite children’s book?

I love the book Where the Red Fern Grows

How do you prefer to communicate with you parents?

I communicate with my parents by a daily behavior grade on their calendars. There is also space at the bottom to write notes. I am available by e-mail and by phone. We are very busy during the day, so calls are returned and/or made during planning or at the end of the day.

Tell about a special event or day your class participated in. You may want to include some student comments about the day or event.

Our class celebrated 100 days in school this year. According to Marlon, his favorite part was eating 100 snacks!

Any other interesting facts or information you would like to share.

Kindergarten is the time in your child’s life for them to fall in love with school!

Sincerely,

Ms. Hatfill
