Do I have to take English classes before I study for the GED?
If you cannot read, write, speak, and understand English in a class room setting with native English speakers, you need to take English classes first. The teacher will give an assessment to determine your level of English. If your test results indicate that you are ready for GED classes, you will be referred to those classes.
What documentation do I need to take the GED Tests?
You will need the following:
- A Tennessee Driver’s License, State ID, or Military ID.
- A birth certificate or Visa, or Passport, or I-94.
- A social security card or tax number
- Other documents requested on the application.
What documentation do I need to enroll in class?
You need to be able to prove that you are at least 18 years of age.
How long do I stay in English class before I can go to GED class?
Once you complete the BEST test, you will discuss your next class with your teacher. You may be referred to an ESOL GED Transitional class.
Do I have to take the GED Tests in English?
No, you can take the test in Spanish or French by special request with the testing center.
Do I have to take the Official Practice Test before I take the GED Tests?
Yes, if you take the GED Test in English, you must take the Practice Test. If you take the GED Test in Spanish or French, you are exempt from the Practice Test.
May I take the Official Practice Test in other languages?
No, it is only given in English.
How old do I have to be to get in English classes?
You must be 18 years of age. If you are 17 years of age and have a Waiver of Compulsory Attendance from the school where you are attending, you may attend Adult Education class.
How much does the GED Tests cost?
Tennessee State University charges $65.00. Volunteer State Community College charges $65.00
May I enroll in more than one English class?
We prefer for students to only enroll in one class at a time since space is limited and there are waiting lists.
Do you offer childcare?
No.
