How do I sign up for the GED Tests?
The GED Tests are given at authorized testing centers in Tennessee. The closest centers are at Tennessee State University (963-7111) or Volunteer State Community College (230-3484). Enrollment is done by going to the testing center and picking up the paperwork or calling and having the application sent through the mail.
How much does the test cost?
Currently, Tennessee State University charges $65.00 and Volunteer State Community College charges $60.00. Tennessee Technology Center at Murfreesboro charges $55.00; partials are $11.00
What documentation do I need to take the GED Tests?
The following items must accompany each application:
- Test fee (non-refundable/non transferable).
- Copy of Social Security card or Birth Certificate.
- Copy of valid Tennessee Driver’s License or Tennessee State ID or Military ID.
- Recent picture (Not a photocopy)for ID purposes (in addition to photo ID). Photo not returned.
- All previous GED scores if you tested at another GED Test Center after January 2, 2002. You must contact each center where you tested and have official test results from all previous test dates sent to the testing center. Check with the testing center for address or fax number.
- Notarized Official Practice Test transcript from the Adult Education office where the Practice Test was taken.
How long does it take to get my scores?
The scores are sent to Oklahoma for grading. They are then sent back to the testing centers and mailed to the individuals. It usually takes about three weeks to receive scores.
Do I have to take the Official Practice Test? (OPT)
Yes. The Official Practice Test is required before enrolling for the GED Test.
How much does the Official Practice Test cost?
It is free of charge.
Do I have to pass the Official Practice Test before I take the real test?
No. However, if you do not make a passing score, it is recommended that you take classes before paying to take the GED Tests.
How long will it take to get my GED?
The answer is different for every person. It depends on how far you went in school, how long it has been since you dropped out of school, and how good your reading skills are. The GED Test is a reading test. The passing scores are set by administering it to high school seniors in the last few months before graduation. Approximately 40% of graduating seniors cannot pass the GED Test.
When can I register for class?
Classes have an open enrollment. You can register the first meeting night of the week at the location nearest you. Call the Adult Education office for a class schedule.
If I miss the first week of enrollment, when is the next time I can enroll in class?
You can enroll the next week on the first meeting night. For example, if the class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can enroll any Tuesday.
How old do I have to be to take the GED Tests?
You must be 18 years of age in the state of Tennessee to take the GED Tests. If you are 17 and have a Waiver of Compulsory Attendance, you may take the test. You must go through the school where you are enrolled to get a waiver.
What kind of documentation do I need to get into class?
You need proof that you are at least 18 years of age or a Waiver of Compulsory Attendance.
May I take the GED Tests in other languages besides English?
Yes, it is offered in Spanish and French by request. You must contact the testing center and ask for the specific test.
May I take the Official Practice Test in other languages besides English?
No, it is only given in English. People who request the Spanish or French GED Test are exempt from taking the Practice Test.
Should I take the Official Practice Test first or go to class first?
It is a personal choice.
