ALWAYS be on the lookout for children. Please obey the 15 mph speed limit in school zones. Children may bepresent in the area surrounding a school at any time, but are especially atpeak times before and after school when the lights on the school zonesigns are flashing. Please obey the crossing guards in school zones. They are there to keepour children safe. If you do not stop for a crossing guard, it is the same asrunning a stop sign or red light—and carries the same penalty! Please slow down and prepare to stop when following or approachingschool buses. NEVER speed up to pass a bus while the warning lights areflashing or when the “stop arm” is extended—it means students are gettingon or off the bus. Not only will you put children in danger, you can also geta ticket.School buses are REQUIRED BY LAW to stop at all railroad crossings. They are also prohibited by law from turning right at stoplights. Please bepatient when following a school bus in traffic. The laws are different forthem!Click the following links to see Tennessee’s laws regarding motorists and school buses, and the penalties for violating those laws.
Remember: all of these rules exist for one reason—to keep our childrensafe! If your route to work takes you through a school zone, or if you areoften stopped by school buses loading children, please leave a fewminutes early or adjust your own route to accommodate your schedule.MNPS Customer Service Center
