Custodian Frequently Asked Questions:

1.  What are the responsibilities of custodians?

See Custodian Responsibility or Custodian Handbook Section

2.  Are custodians supposed to change light bulbs?

Yes, with the exception of any area that requires more than a 6’ ladder or the exterior security lights. Those areas should be performed by the Maintenance Department

3.  What areas are custodians responsible for mowing/trimming?

As a rule of thumb most custodian mowing/trimming areas are limited to the area immediately around the facility or the nearest sidewalk except for weeding flower plots.  The ground department is responsible for other areas.

4. When are custodians supposed to strip and refinish floors?

Generally floors are restored throughout the facility on an annual basis.  Depending on the condition of the floor this may be stripping or scrubbing and recoating. During the winter break, if excessively deteriorated, a small amount of floor restoration can be done (remembering that usually there are only 5 or 6 work days available).

5. Are custodians supposed to refinish gyms each year?

No, refinishing a gym requires more experience that most custodians have. Currently there is a service contract to perform screening and recoating of gyms. We endeavor to be on a 2 year schedule if funds are available.

6. Are custodians required to change HVAC filters?

Yes, on units where filters are readily accessible the custodian should change the filters monthly. On units where the filter is not readily accessible the Maintenance Department should be contacted.

7. Shouldn’t a custodian be stationed in the cafeteria during the entire lunch period?

No, the custodian should check and take care of any problems in the cafeteria then check on restrooms or other needed areas on a rotational basis throughout the period.

8. Are custodians supposed clean carpet pieces brought in by teachers?

Normally it is not recommended to bring in pieces of carpet. However, if there are pieces brought in the custodian should vacuum them if they are secured to the floor and will not be sucked into the machine. During the summer months the carpet pieces may not be extracted.

9. Should custodians be required to paint in facilities?

Only to some degree. Custodians can spot paint walls or other areas. If a substantial amount of painting is required (i.e. painting entire hallways) the Maintenance Department should be contacted.

10. Should a custodian be routinely required to assist teachers or staff with duties of a personal nature?

Generally custodian should only perform duties that pertain to their official duties for the school system. The exception would be at the beginning/end of a school year to assist in getting ready for the start/end of school.
