Board Letter - May 20, 2005
|
Enclosed are the preliminary results of the Gateway Test Scores. We still do not have the scores back from
all of the schools. When we get this information, we will forward it to you. These are just preliminary results for you to review.
DR. SANDY JOHNSON, CHIEF INSTRUCTIONAL OFFICER
Mandarin Chinese to be Offered at Two High Schools
We are pleased to announce the newest foreign language offering at MLK and Hume-Fogg. Mandarin Chinese,
the most spoken language in the world, will be offered at both schools beginning in the 2005-2006 school year.
This new program is a direct result of parental request and involvement in our schools and a benefactor for
this program, Mr. Joe Russell. We plan to offer two classes at each school with the latest textbooks and
teachers who are bilingual in English and Mandarin.
Students at both schools are enthusiastic about the addition of a Pacific Rim language. Some economists
say that Mandarin is the hottest offering in languages world-wide due to China’s new economic policy of
permitting Western business into China. Hence, our school system is pleased to be on the cutting edge
in foreign language offerings.
Update On TCAP Individual Student Reports
We received word yesterday that our TCAP individual student reports will not be back by the last
day of school. In fact, it appears that no district in the State will receive their student reports and
rosters until sometime after June 1. We knew this was a strong possibility with the later testing this
year, although recent information we received had been more encouraging.
Student reports will be printed in the order test materials were received by the State. Our materials
reached the State Department of Education ahead of most school districts, but this year they will
not begin printing reports until all answer documents for all districts have been scanned and edited.
The scanning and editing process will likely continue through the end of this month.
We will provide information regarding how TCAP student reports will be distributed to parents at a later time.
LANCE LOTT, CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
We are in the midst of the end of year processing on Chancery SMS. We have unprecedented volume on
the system due to the need to get all information correctly entered into the system for this year and to
get schedules set for next school year. The volume of data and users has led to some sporadic incidents
of dropped sessions with the system. We have worked closely with top engineers from Chancery and Microsoft
to find ways to ease the pressure being generated on the system. We have implemented some workarounds
earlier in the week that have helped. Thursday, Chancery and Microsoft recommended some technical
configuration changes that have had a positive impact. With the exception of a small number of schools
that are experiencing some slowness in their local networks, overall processing was more responsive on Thursday.
We have also worked very closely with the schools to determine which schools might need additional
resources to close out the year. Nearly all schools are in good shape with final processing. There are
a very small number of schools (less than 10) that have had some difficulty making final corrections
to the data. Plans are being worked in each of these schools to ensure we meet our deadlines for reporting.
We will be meeting with Chancery executives the week of June 20 th to debrief on the 2004-2005
school year. At this meeting, we will review the events of the year in light of the commitments that
have been made under the contract.
