Course Description

 

This course is a continuation of Jazz Improvisation III.

 
Course of Study

 

  • Singing
    • Sings with proper expression in an ensemble setting.
    • Uses appropriate style and articulation in an ensemble setting.
    • Performs with accurate pitch while singing in harmony.
  • Playing instruments
    • Uses appropriate tone in an ensemble, based on the style being performed.
    • Performs in an ensemble setting, reflecting correct technique and expressive devices.
    • Demonstrates correct posture and hand position while performing selected musical examples.
    • Discerns and corrects pitch discrepancies in an ensemble performance.
  • Improvising
    • Performs advanced improvisations using a blues scale.
    • Performs a solo over intermediate chord progressions.
  • Composing/Arranging
    • Creates an original melody over a jazz 12-bar blues progression with chord substitutions.
    • Transposes a given melody from one instrument to another.
    • Arranges a musical example for a small ensemble.
  • Reading/Notating
    • Correctly performs pitches and rhythmic values in an ensemble setting.
    • Performs intermediate to medium-advanced written notation in a stylistically appropriate manner.
    • Demonstrates intermediate music notation techniques.
  • Listening/Analyzing/Describing
    • Uses standard terminology to evaluate music on technical and aesthetic levels.
    • Listens to various sub-genres of jazz and other American music styles, then identifies and describes similarities and differences
    • Analyzes and describes a live musical performance.
  • Evaluating
    • Demonstrates a developing knowledge of the historical and cultural background and influences in jazz styles.
    • Self-evaluates performance of music at the intermediate to medium-advanced level.
