Course Description
This course is designed for the student who wants to pursue the study and performance of jazz on his/her chosen instrument. The student will study and execute the technique of improvisation. Eat Training will be included in this course
Course of Study
- Singing
- Identifies singing with proper expression.
- Recognizes appropriate style and articulation
- Performs with accurate pitch while singing alone.
- Playing instruments
- Identifies appropriate tone based on the style being performed.
- Performs basic musical examples reflecting correct technique and expressive devices.
- Demonstrates correct posture and hand position while performing selected musical examples.
- Discerns pitch discrepancies in an ensemble performance.
- Improvising
- Performs a simple improvisations using a blues scale.
- Composing/Arranging
- Creates an original melody over a basic 12-bar blues progression.
- Transposes a given melody from one instrument to another.
- Reading/Notating
- Correctly identifies pitches and rhythmic values.
- Identifies techniques to perform written notation in a stylistically appropriate manner.
- Demonstrates basic music notation techniques.
- Listening/Analyzing/Describing
- Demonstrates basic understanding of the terminology used to evaluate music on technical and aesthetic levels.
- Listens to various sub-genres of jazz and other American music styles.
- Listens to music and makes a critical analysis of the performance.
- Evaluating
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of the historical and cultural background and influences in jazz styles.
