Course Description

 

This course is the continuation of music studied in the fourth grade.  Vocal development, movement to music and playing instruments (where available) will be stressed.  Students will begin to explore music of different periods in history and from different cultures.  Music reading and ear training with the use of solfege will continue.  Students should learn to sing in simple harmony.

 

Course of Study

 

·        Singing

o       Students will demonstrate the ability to sing alone and in unison

o       Students will demonstrate the ability to sing expressively using proper vocal technique.

o       Students will demonstrate the ability to sing in parts.

 

·        Performing

o       Students will play syncopated and non-syncopated rhythms.

o       Students will play question and answer phrases.

o       Students will demonstrate skill in playing simple harmonies

 

·        Improvising

o       Students will improvise upon a simple melody vocally and/or instrumentally.

o       Students will improvise a simple variation vocally and/or instrumentally.

o       Students will improvise a simple accompaniment.

 

·        Composing

o       Students will compose a simple piece within specified guidelines.

o       Students will create a simple arrangement of a composition.

 

·        Reading and notating

o       Students will demonstrate skills in interpreting musical notation including rhythm, melody and harmony.

o       Students will demonstrate skills in notating music including rhythm, melody, and harmony.

 

·        Listening

o       Students will recognize, aurally, music with theme and variations.

o       Students will recognize, aurally, major and minor tonalities in music.

o       Students will recognize, aurally, music from different genres.

 

·        Evaluating

o       Students will examine and evaluate, aurally and visually, selected music examples.

o       Students will evaluate the quality of music performances.

 

·        Understanding relationships between music and other arts

o       Students will compare characteristics of two or more arts.

o       Students will demonstrate ways in which the principles of other disciplines relate with those of music

 

·        Understanding music in relation to history and culture

o       Students will identify and discuss music from different historical periods.

o       Students will identify and discuss music from different genres and cultures.
