Course Description
This course is a continuation of Piano II. Repertory and technical studies will be adapted to the capabilities of the student. There will be a continued use of the electronic piano lab. Students should have a piano available at home for practice.
Course of Study
o Familiar songs using block chords as an accompaniment
o A relative minor scale ascending and descending
o Literature at a difficulty level of 2 – 3 by memory
o Ensemble proficiency in duets, duos and larger groups
o An accompaniment to a given melody, i.e., waltz or alberti bass
o Varied melodic and rhythmic patterns over a I, IV, V7 chord progression
o A simple, two-phrase melody using I, IV, V7 chords
o Creative options through dynamics and/or articulations
o Key signatures, more complex rhythmic patterns and common symbols
o A variety of piano repertoire at a minimum difficulty level of 2 – 3 sight-reading both hands together
o Identify music recordings of a variety of musical styles and genres
o Identify the elements of music which combine to make music expressive
o Develop criteria with which to assess compositions and/or performances
o Differentiate between subjective and objective components of assessment
- Understanding relationships between music and other disciplines
o Identify how non-arts disciplines influence the arts
o Trace one musical element and its use within one or more disciplines outside the arts
- Understanding music in relationship to history and culture
o Written report assessing music’s relationship to a particular culture
o Presentation discussing musical styles in terms of historical periods
