Course Description

 

The emphasis in this course is on the development of strength and for quickness of body and mind coordination. The application of phrasing and the quality of movement is stressed. Center practice will include balance, jumps, leaps, extensions and turns, with the emphasis on exactness and precision of line. Pointe work is required in this course.

 

Course of Study

 

In order to develop strength, flexibility, and endurance needed at this level, students must review all movements learned previously and practice in various combinations.

 

·        Barre

o                   Pliés with all port de bras and lunge

o                   The following movements using body positions:

§         Battement tendu, battement jeté, rond de jambe

o                   The following movements on demi pointe and using body positions:

§         Battement frappé, petit battement, battu, rond de jambe en l’air, battement developpé, grand battement

 

·        Center

o                   Pas de bourrée over/under (turning)

o                   Double pirouette from 4th position (en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Full promenade in all big poses (straight leg)

o                   Single pirouette from 5th position (en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Single pirouette from 2nd position (en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Enveloppé

o                   Pas de bourrée ballotté, ending with toe on floor

o                   1/2 piqué tours (jeté en tournant)

o                   Penchée forward

o                   Pirouette in attitude (en dedans)

o                   Full promenade in attitude (devant and derriére)

o                   6th port de bras

o                   Rond de jambe par terre with 1/8 and 1/4 turns

o                   Battement relevé lent with rise to demi pointe at 90 degrees

o                   Pas de basque (back)

o                   Demi grand rond de jambe at 90 degrees from pose to pose

o                   4-8 fouetté turns

 

·        Allegro

o                   Entrechat quatre

o                   Échappé battu

o                   Brisé

o                   Assemblé battu (over)

o                   Saut de basque (en tournant)

o                   Sissone tombé (sliding toe) then assemblé side and front

o                   Ballonné sauté in all directions and body positions (in place)

o                   Stage form of pas de chat

o                   Emboité

o                   Cabriole (back)

o                   Jeté (side, finishing in croisé)

o                   Sissone fermé (all directions and poses)

o                   Jeté battu (over)

o                   Sissone ouverte with assemblé (all directions)

o                   Coupé used in combination with other movements

o                   Échappé sauté finishing on one leg

o                   Échappé sauté with 1/2 turn

 

·        Pointe

o                   Relevé in 1st, 2nd, and 5th positions (center)

o                   Échappé to 2nd position from 1st and 5th positions (center)

o                   Assemblé soutenu (side, front, back and in the small poses, in the center)

o                   Pas de bourrée suivi in 5th position traveling (center)    

o                   Pas couru on 1st position forward (center)

o                   Battement tendu working through demi pointe (all directions, barre and center)

o                   Grand plié in 2nd position on pointe (barre)

o                   Pas de bourrée changé closing in 5th position (center)

o                   Pas couru in 1st position backward (center)

o                   Consecutive turns in place (pas de bourrée suivi en tournant in the center)

o                   Relevé in 4th position (center: en face, croisé, and effacé)

o                   Échappé to 4th position (center: en face, croisé, and effacé)

o                   Pas de bourrée suivi and pas couru along the diagonal (center)

o                   Glissade in all directions (in small poses in center)

o                   Sissone simple (center: en face and with epaulement)

o                   Pas de bourrée sans changé (without changing) from side to side, with toe on floor, and at 45 degrees

o                   Pas de bourrée ballotté forward and backward, finishing with toe on the floor, croisé and effacé

o                   Pas de bourrée suivi around a circle (center)

o                   Coupé-ballonné to the side (barre)

 

Reading: In addition to reading teacher handouts, students are expected to read from a variety of sources including articles and biographies on history, terminology, injury prevention, and basic anatomy. Students are expected to gain literal understanding of readings and also to interpret, analyze, and evaluate information from the readings.

 

Writing: Students are expected to apply correct ballet terminology in written and oral communication. Suggested written assignments include journals, critiques, document‑based questions, and dance notation.
