Course Description
This course is a continuation of Advanced Ballet I.
Course of Study
In order to develop strength, flexibility, and endurance needed at this level, students must review all movements learned in Ballet I-IV and Advanced Ballet I and practice in various combinations.
· Barre
o Fouetté en tournant en dehors and en dedans
o Battement fondu (retiré) at 90 degrees
o Flic-flac en tournant
o Grand battement jeté (above 90 degrees)
o One tour from 2nd position at 45 degrees
o Port de bras with leg raised at 90 degrees forward and backward
o Penchée forward and backward on demi pointe
· Center
o Battement fondu en tournant at 90 degrees with 1/4 turns
o Rond de jambe en l’air en tournant with 1/4 turns
o Pirouettes in all big poses from an échappé sauté to 4th position
o Two pirouettes from 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th positions, finishing in all big poses
o Temps lié with promenade and relevé in all positions and directions
o Port de bras in all big poses
o Battement developpés while doing promenade from pose to pose
o Battement relevé lent while doing promenade from pose to pose
o Penchée backward
o 8 fouetté tours en dedans
o Temps lié with pirouettes à terre and at 90 degrees, finishing on demi pointe
o 32 fouetté tours en dehors
o Three pirouettes from 4thposition en dehors and en dedans
o Two pirouettes in all big poses from 2nd and 4th positions
o Grand rond de jambe developpé on demi pointe
· Allegro
o One rond de jambe en l’air sauté
o Cabriole at 60 degrees in all directions
o Sissone ouverte with developpé to 90 degrees
o Grand jeté en tournant (in a straight line)
o Brisé dessus-dessous
o Entrechat cinq
o Entrechat six
o Échappé en tournant with one tour
o Grand assemblé
o Sissone ouverte en tournant in all directions
o Grand jeté finishing in attitude
o Grand ballotté
o Grand jeté en tournant in a circle
o Boys: single and double tour en l’air from sussous, assemblé, piqué en dehors, etc.
o Grand pirouette (ladies-4 turns, men-16 turns)
· Pointe
o Pas de bourrée suivi at a quick tempo
o Relevés on one foot at 45 degrees in all directions (8-16)
o Chassé relevé into various arabesques
o Pas de bourrée en tournant, all versions
o Échappé to 4th position en tournant with 1/2 turns
o Échappé to 2th position en tournant with full turn
o Sissone ouverte at 45 degrees in all directions and poses, in place
o Jeté in the big poses and plié in the same place (piqué with fondu)
o Changement de pieds en tournant
o Assemblé soutenu en tournant to the side with 1/2 turns en dehors and en dedans
o Assemblé soutenu en tournant with full turns
o Sissone simple en tournant with 1/4, 1/2, and full turns
o Two pirouettes in cou de pied from 4th position, en dehors and en dedans
o Grande sissone ouverte in all directions and poses, in place
o Two piqué tours en dehors and en dedans
o One tour from 4th position and from various movements, en dehors and en dedans (also doubles)
o Grand battement in all directions (barre and center)
o Relevés in arabesques (8-16 repetitions)
o Rond de jambe en l’air en dehors and en dedans
o Grand sissone ouverte travelling in all directions and poses
o Fouetté at 45 degrees (8-16)
o Changement de pieds traveling en diagonale
o Consecutive tours from 5th position (8-16), en dehors and en dedans
o Turns in big poses: arabesques, attitude devant and derrière (relevé and piqué)
o Two tours from 4th position and from various movements, en dehors and en dedans
o Two tours from 5th position, en dehors and en dedans
Reading: In addition to reading teacher handouts, students are expected to read from a variety of sources including articles and biographies on history, terminology, injury prevention, and basic anatomy. Students are expected to gain literal understanding of readings and also to interpret, analyze, and evaluate information from the readings.
Writing: Students are expected to apply correct ballet terminology in written and oral communication. Suggested written assignments include journals, critiques, document‑based questions, and dance notation.
