Course Description

 

This course is designed for the student who has had prior experience in ballet and wishes to further his/her study. There will be performance requirements for this course.

 

Course of Study

 

In order to develop strength, flexibility, and endurance needed at this level, students must review all movements learned in Ballet I-IV and practice in various combinations.

 

·        Barre

o                   Port de bras with leg raised at 90 degrees forward and backward on flat

o                   Grand battement jeté at 90 degrees

o                   Grand rond de jambe jeté

o                   Flic-flac (straight and turning)

o                   Soft grand battement

o                   Fouetté en tournant en dehors and en dedans

o                   Penchée forward on demi pointe

 

·        Center

o                   Temps lié with promenade in all poses and directions

o                   Soft grand battement

o                   Battement fondu en tournant at 45 degrees with 1/4 turns

o                   Rond de jambe en l’air en tournant with 1/8 turns

o                   One pirouette from 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th positions, finishing in all big poses

o                   Temps lié with promenade and relevé in all positions and directions

o                   Battement relevé lent while doing promenade from pose to pose

o                   Penchée backward

o                   One pirouette in all big poses from 2nd and 4th (en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Two pirouettes finishing in all big poses

o                   16 fouetté tours en dehors

o                   Two clean pirouettes from 2nd, 4th, and 5th positions en dehors and en dedans

 

·        Allegro

o                   Jeté battu (under)

o                   Échappé battu finishing on 1 leg

o                   Sissone simple en tournant en dehors and en dedans

o                   One rond de jambe en l’air sauté

o                   Cabriole at 45 degrees in all directions

o                   Sissone ouverte with developpé

o                   Jeté entrelacé (tour jeté)

o                   Grand jeté en tournant (in a straight line)

o                   Boys: single tour en l’air from assemblé

 

·        Pointe

o                   Pas de bourrée dessus-dessous

o                   Jeté without traveling and also traveling in all directions

o                   Pas de polka

o                   Échappé to 2nd position en tournant with 1/4 turns

o                   Pas de bourrée suivi at a quick tempo

o                   Changement de pieds

o                   Relevés on one foot at 45 degrees in all directions (4 repetitions)

o                   Chassé relevé into various arabesques

o                   Pas de bourrée en tournant, all versions

o                   Échappé to 4th position en tournant with 1/4 turns

o                   Échappé to 2th position en tournant with 1/2 turns

o                   Sissone ouverte at 45 degrees in all directions and poses, in place

o                   Jeté in the big poses and plié in the same place (piqué with fondu)

o                   Changement de pieds en tournant

o                   Assemblé soutenu en tournant with full turns

o                   Sissone simple en tournant with 1/4, 1/2, and full turns

o                   One tour cou de pied from 4th position, en dehors and en dedans

o                   Piqué tour en dehors and en dedans

o                   One pirouette from 4th position and from various movement (en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Grand battement in all directions (barre)

o                   Relevés in arabesques (4 repetitions)

o                   Consecutive tours from 5th positions (4 en dehors and en dedans)

o                   Fouetté at 45 degrees, four times

o                   Relevés in attitude, devant and derrière (4 repetitions)

 

Reading: In addition to reading teacher handouts, students are expected to read from a variety of sources including articles and biographies on history, terminology, injury prevention, and basic anatomy. Students are expected to gain literal understanding of readings and also to interpret, analyze, and evaluate information from the readings.

 

Writing: Students are expected to apply correct ballet terminology in written and oral communication. Suggested written assignments include journals, critiques, document‑based questions, and dance notation.
