Course Description

This course offers students the continued process of learning to speak Spanish at an advanced level.  Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are refined so that students are able to comprehend and produce Spanish at a high level of proficiency.  In addition, the culture of the Hispanic world is studied in greater detail.  A pre-requisite for this course is that juniors and seniors be of serious intent to pursue the IB Spanish program their junior and senior years.  These proficiencies are demonstrated through the rigors of the IB examination. 

 

Course of Study

Thematic vocabulary, grammatical concepts, reading selections, and cultural explanations I alignment with the Spanish IB curriculum are presented to the students.  Students will pursue these skills taught by means of a variety of learning strategies: dialoging, role playing, reading and responding, written composition, listening comprehension activities, and oral interviews.  As students complete Spanish I – IB, they will be able to comprehend, speak, read, and write Spanish at a level conducive to preparation for the study of Spanish II-IB.

·        acquire listening comprehension skills with vocabulary introduced

·        execute Spanish written proficiency with provided prompts

·        demonstrate accurate pronunciation of the target language

·        comprehend with understanding reading selections provided in the text

·        respond orally in interview situations

·        develop global awareness and tolerance of the diversity of Hispanic culture

·        relate Hispanic culture and loan words to history and literature studied in Pre-IB

·        apply correct grammatical usage in speaking and writing situations

Thematic Vocabulary

  • Vocabulary begins with the student himself and continues in an ever-expanding concentric circle to include depth in the vocabulary needed.
  • Vocabulary is consistent with literary terms needed for literary analysis.
  • Vocabulary is amplified through reading, listening, and conversations of advanced concepts.
  • Vocabulary is based on Pan American Spanish; however, multiple Spanish equivalents are provided as appropriate
  • Vocabulary is relevant to the study of Hispanic literature and drama.
  • Vocabulary is adequate to encompass history, current events, and analyzing literature.

Assessments: Students will be evaluated by means of the following:

·        dictations in Spanish

·        oral readings and recitations

·        written compositions/dialogues to various writing prompts

·        oral interviews conducted by the teacher

·        selecting appropriate listening rejoinders to scripts read aloud

·        quizzes on thematic vocabulary

·        exercises to show correct application of grammatical concepts

·        standardized tests generated from the text

·        paired and group presentations

·        writing letters to Hispanic pen pals

·        an exit test measuring the students listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
