Course Description

French V offers students of serious intent an intensive course designed to foster higher level communication with the French language.  Four skills are consistently addressed in the teaching of this course:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Exposure of the francophone world integrates itself among the varied lessons of grammar, vocabulary, speaking activities, and current reading selections of the text.  The skills and concepts taught in French V are in alignment with the objectives mandated by the state of Tennessee for teaching the course Advanced Placement French.  A pre-requisite for this course is that students successfully complete French I, II, III, and French IV.

 

Course of Study

 Thematic vocabulary, grammar concepts, reading selections, and cultural explanation in alignment with French V curriculum is presented to the students.  Students will entertain these skills taught by means of a variety of learning strategies:  dialoguing, role playing, reading and responding, written composition, listening comprehension activities, and oral interviews/discussions.  As students complete IB French V, they will be able to comprehend, speak, read, and write French at a high level of proficiency.

 

Objectives: Using the French language, students will be expected to…..

·        acquire listening comprehension skills with vocabulary introduced

·        execute French written proficiency with provided prompts

·        demonstrate accurate pronunciation of the target language

·        comprehend with understanding advanced reading selections

      found in novels, magazines, and newspapers

·        respond orally in impromptu interview situations

·        continue to develop global awareness and tolerance of the diversity of

      francophone cultures

·        understand the use of French loan words in historical, literary, and current   

       readings

·        apply correct, complex grammatical usage in speaking and writing situations

·        reveal high levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the French language

Assessments: Students will be evaluated by a combination of IB rubric guided assessment, internal teacher designed tests, and external testing by the IBO.  Also, the following assessment strategies will be utilized:

·        oral discussions on topics of study

·        written reactions to presented reading selections

·        written compositions/dialogues to various prompts

·        oral interview and discussions between student and teacher

·        selecting appropriate listening rejoinders to scripts read aloud

·        quizzes on reading selections

·        exercises to show correct application of grammatical concepts

·        standardized tests generated from the text

·        paired and group presentations

·        writing letters and e-mailing French speakers on the internet
