Course Description
French III offers students the chance to explore and French cultures in depth while continuing the process of learning to speak French. The four skills are addressed in the teaching of this course: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Exposure of the world and its various cultures and literatures integrates itself among the varied lessons of culture, sound recognition and reproduction, grammar, vocabulary, literature and proper usage. French III is taught almost entirely in French. As students complete French III, they will be able to comprehend, speak and write French beyond an intermediate-low level and be prepared to study of French IV and AP French Language or AP French Literature.
Course of Study
Objectives: Using the target language students will be expected to
- demonstrate accurate pronunciation of the target language
- acquire listening comprehension skills with vocabulary introduced
- respond at intermediate competency in oral interview situations
- speak correctly on prepared and unprepared topics
- understand instruction and directions in French
- apply correct grammar and vocabulary usage in speaking and writing situations at an intermediate level
- comprehend with understanding reading selections at the beginning and intermediate levels
- execute written proficiency with provided prompts especially with spelling
- develop global awareness and tolerance of the diversity of francophone cultures
- express opinions and feelings on a variety of topics
- understand more deeply the French speaking peoples around the world
- relate French loan words incorporated in the curricula of history, literature, and art

Assessments
Students will be evaluated by means of the following:
- dictations in French to include poems and short stories
- selecting appropriate listening rejoinders to oral prompts
- oral and written quizzes on thematic vocabulary
- projects requiring the application of knowledge, listening, speaking, reading, writing, research and creativity skills
- paired, group, individual presentations
- oral interviews
- oral readings and recitations
- written compositions, dialogues, etc. to various writing prompts
- writing to French-speakers via school mail or e-mail
- standardized tests generated from the text
- exercises to show correct application of grammatical concepts
