Course Description

The German program for 7th grade is a basic introduction to the language and people of the German-speaking world.  This course introduces students to German pronunciation and basic vocabulary terms on thematic topics.  Students are encouraged to learn basic conversational patterns and read simple, basic narratives.  Students study the German culture throughout the course.

 

Course of Study: (1st Rotation experience for 6 weeks)

Students are expected to use and understand the following topics.

Functions of the language:

  • German-English cognates (i.e. mann-man, haus-house)
  • German alphabet, including combination and special sounds
  • Basic Conversations                                                                                               o       Hello. Goodbye.                                                                                               o       How are you?                                                                                                  o       What’s your name?                                                                                           o       Where are you from?                                                                                        o       How old are you?
  • Telling Time
  • Writing simple sentences
  • Answering simple questions
  • Expanded numbers application practice                                                                  o       Working math problems in German                                                                   o       Giving telephone numbers
  • German cultural readings

 

Grammatical Concepts:

  • Plural of Nouns and use of articles
  • Information questions
  • Subject pronouns
  • Personal Pronouns
  • Present Tense of many verbs

 

Cultural Concepts:

  • Geography of Europe and German-speaking countries
  • Genealogy-family tree, origin of names
  • Post World War II Germany
  • Norse mythology and legends

Thematic Vocabulary:

·        Numbers (1-100)

·        Days of the week

·        Months of the year

·        Seasons

·        Colors

·        Classroom vocabulary (school supplies and classroom objects)

·        Holidays

  • Question words/Interrogative pronouns
  • Some German customs-compare and contrast with American customs
  • Present tense of verbs

  • Articles of Clothing
  • Food Vocabulary
  • People/Places
