Course Description
The emphasis of this course gives students a good base in Spanish. Students develop an understanding of Spanish sounds and pronunciation. Students develop basic skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. They also learn basic vocabulary on common themes and acquire an understanding of fundamental grammar concepts. Furthermore, students study the cultural and historical background of many Spanish-speaking countries. This course can be offered as the first part of a two-year sequence for Spanish I high school credit.
Course of Study:
Students are expected to use and understand the following topics. These are the first, second, and third rotation topics.
· Geography- Countries and Capitals, Economic and Cultural
· Spanish alphabet
· Pronunciation
· Cognates (Profesor/Professor, Familia/Family)
· Rhymes, Tongue Twisters and Songs
· Basic Conversation (Greetings, Names, Questions [How are you, Where are you from, etc.], Farewells)
· Question Words
· Yes/No Questions
· Numbers (1-100)
· Classroom Vocabulary and Classroom Commands
· Colors
· Plurals of nouns and use of articles
· Days of the week, Months and Seasons
· Dates
· Clothing
· Body Parts
· Weather
· Family Members (Family Tree)
· Rooms in a house
· Describing self and others
· Classes and Subjects in school
· “Ser” and “Estar”
· Time
· Numbers 100-1,000,000
· Activities
· Foods and Beverages and phrases for ordering in a restaurant
· Subject pronouns
· Present tense “-ar” verbs
· “Ir” verb
· “Ir” a + infinitive
· Use of “gustar” (me gusta, te gusta, le gusta) with infinitives and nouns
· “Tener” and “Tener” phrases (age, hot, cold, scared, thirsty, hungry)
· Information questions
· Combination of “a + el” and “de + el”
· Geography Features (Andes Mountains, Amazon River, Nazca Lines)
Topics to be covered for the entire year should be all those listed above, in greater detail and practice; also, the following:
· Yo form “go” verbs
· “Saber” and “Conocer”
· Stem-changing verbs
· Direct object and Indirect object pronouns
· Subject pronouns
· Adverbs of frequency (siempre, rara vez, de vez en cuando, nunca)
· Familiar affirmative commands
· Present Progressive
· Giving/Asking for directions
Cultural Topics may include:
· Cinco de mayo
· Quinceañera
· Names
· Día de los muertos
· Musical Artists (i.e., Plácido Domingo, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias)
· Historical Figures (i.e., Fidel Castro, Queen Isabella, Che Guevera)
· Artists (i.e., Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, El Greco )
· Sports and Sports Figures (i.e., Sammy Sosa, Sergio García, World Cup Soccer, Jai-Alai)
