Course Description

The emphasis in this course is placed on introducing students to the vast Spanish-speaking culture.  Students are introduced to the basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a gradual progression.  Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building skills and listening comprehension.  Students are able to read simple paragraphs on thematic topics.

 

Course of Study:

Students are expected to use and understand the following topics.  These are the first rotation topics.

·        Geography- Countries and Capitals

·        Spanish alphabet

·        Pronunciation

·        Cognates (Profesor/Professor, Familia/Family)

·        Rhymes, Tongue Twisters and Songs

·        Basic Conversation (Greetings, Names, Questions [How are you, Where are you from, etc.], Farewells)

·        Question Words

·        Yes/No Questions

·        Numbers (1-100)

·        Classroom Vocabulary and Classroom Commands

·        Colors

·        Plurals of nouns and use of articles

·        Days of the week, Months and Seasons

 

For students entering the subject for a second rotation, the following topics should be applied:

·        Geography- Economic and Cultural (products, monies and exchange rates)

·        Dates

·        Clothing

·        Body Parts

·        Weather

·        Family Members (Family Tree)

·        Rooms in a house

·        Describing self and others

·        Classes and Subjects in school

·        “Ser” and “Estar”

·        Time

·        Numbers 100-1,000,000

·        Activities during and after school

·        Animals

·        Adjective agreement

·        Foods and Beverages and phrases for ordering in a restaurant

 

Cultural Topics may include:

·        Cinco de mayo

·        Flamenco

·        Día de los muertos

·        Musical Artists (i.e., Plácido Domingo, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan)

·        Historical Figures (i.e., Fidel Castro, Queen Isabella)

·        Artists (i.e., Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí)
