Course Description
The Spanish program for 5th grade is a basic introduction to the language and people of the Spanish-speaking world. Generally taught as part of a related arts rotation, this course introduces students to Spanish pronunciation and basic vocabulary terms on thematic topics. They are encouraged to learn basic conversational patterns and read simple, basic narratives. Students study the Spanish culture throughout the course.
Course of Study:
Students are expected to use and understand the following topics.
· Geography- Countries and Capitals
· Spanish alphabet
· Pronunciation
· Cognates (Profesor/Professor, Familia/Family)
· Rhymes, Tongue Twisters and Songs
· Basic Conversation (Greetings, Names, Questions [How are you, Where are you from, etc.], Farewells)
· Question Words
· Yes/No Questions
· Numbers (1-100)
· Classroom Vocabulary and Commands
· Colors
· Plurals of nouns and use of articles
· Days of the week, Months and Seasons
For a 12 week rotation, or for additional topics add the following:
· Dates
· Clothing
· Body Parts
· Weather
· Family Members (Family Tree)
Cultural Topics may include:
· Cinco de mayo
· Día de los muertos
· Musical Artists (i.e., Ricky Martin)
· Historical Figures (i.e., Pancho Villa)
· Artists (i.e., Pablo Picasso)
