Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to self-defense techniques. Through the participation in confidence building activities and role play, participants will feel less vulnerable and more in control.
Course of Study
This course will offer participants the opportunity to become familiar with different aspects of self-defense. The focus will be on developing a sound mind and sound body relative to self-defense techniques. Strategies are focused on preventing physical aggression. Activities could include but are not limited to the following:
· History
· Terminology
o Accuracy
o Chest push
o Finger jab
o Follow-through
o Front choke
o Front hug
o Groin hit
o Kick
o Knee lift
o Rear attack
o Scream
o Speed
o Supine kick
o Thumb gouge
o Vulnerable areas
· Equipment
o Football dummy bags, rolled gymnastics mats and volleyballs (if available)
o Pillows or cushions
· Strategies
o Eliminate the potential of danger before it begins
o Recognize and avoid danger
o Fight only when necessary
· Five Principles of Defending Yourself
o Resist immediately, decisively and explosively
o Yell loudly
o Attack a vulnerable target (areas) such as eyes, nose, neck, groin, knees
o Fight to win—100% conviction, 100% of the time
o Never go to another location
· Basic techniques
o Accuracy of blows
o Force of blows
o Speed
o Follow-through
o Screams
o Vulnerable areas (eyes, nose, neck, groin, knees)
o bodily weapons (head, voice, hands, elbows, fingers and thumb, knees, feet)
· Skills
o Self defense basics
§ Ready stance (feet shoulder width apart, hands out in front, square to attacker)
§ Step evasion (sidestepping out of direct line of an attack)
§ Block (ready stance, block forearm to forearm, step-evade to outside of attacker)
§ Yell Hey (always yell “hey” with each strike or kick---LOUD!!
o Strikes
§ Knee lift
§ Groin pull
§ Groin hit
§ Single-hand blow
§ Double-hand blow
§ Thumb gouge
§ Finger ja
§ Palm heal (extends arm in straight line towards nose or chin—strike through target)
§ Hammerfist (extend arm to the side making contact with pinky side of fist. Strike through)
§ Elbow (draws strike arm away from body, shift hips, strike back and through target)
§ Yell (yells “hey” loudly during each strike
o Kicks
§ Kick (opens hip, chambers kicking leg, locks ankle, contact on laces of shoe)
§ Front kick
§ Side kick
§ Rear kick
§ Supine kick
§ Knee (reciprocal motion, pull attacker in to knee, drive through target)
§ Circle reflex (moves in direction of attacker, keeps legs active at all times)
o Releases
§ Wrist release (one and two hand release, utilizing radial bone position)
§ Choke escapes (tucks chin, shrugs shoulders, raises hands, pivot 180 degrees)
§ Bear hug defense (head butts, foot stomps, shin kicks, groin strike, eye gouges)
§ Chest push
§ Front two-handed choke
§ Attack from the rear
o Ground defense
§ Attacker knocks you down and is standing over you with his legs on either side of you (pull knees to chest through attackers legs, grab behind ankles, press knees to attackers shins, push/pull, get up and run away)
§ Attacker is straddling you and pinning your hands to the ground (pull elbows to your chest, place your leg over the top of the attackers calf, throw opposite hip into attacker, flip attacker to the side, get up and run away)
