Course Description
A course of study for non-native speakers of English whose proficiency level is below adopted standards as established by oral and written tests. The course provides for a sequential development of English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Instruction is based on adopted texts and supplementary materials for each skill level.
Course of Study
First Semester
· Standard Conventions of English/Grammar
Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL II and:
o Parts of speech; sentence parts; subject/predicate and complements
o Types of sentences
o Subject/verb agreement; regular and irregular verbs
o Types of pronouns and their usage
o Adjectives and adverbs: comparative and superlative forms
o Plurals, possessives, negatives
o Errors in sentences: fragments, comma usage, run-ons
o Commas, end punctuation, and quotation marks
o Capitalization, contractions, and affixes
· Standard ELL Functions
o Language functions at the ELL III level are those functions from ELL I and II
levels which need to be reinforced to meet specific needs of students in an
ELL III level class.
· ELL Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks covered in ELL II:
o Making a tree diagram
o Making a web diagram
o Listening for specific information
o Making a story map
o Making a timeline
· ELL Reading Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all reading tasks in ELL II:
o Skimming
o Scanning
o Note taking
o Questioning
o Using context clues
o Identifying parts of speech
o Predicting outcomes
o Forming opinions
· ELL Writing Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all writing tasks in ELL II:
o Prewriting
o Drafting
o Revising
o Editing and proofreading
o Publishing
o Evaluating writing
o Writing for a specific purpose
o Writing for a specific audience
· Vocabulary
o Incorporates vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social, and school related topics.
Second Semester
· Standard Conventions of English/Grammar
Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL II and:
o Homophones
o How to correct errors observed in his or her writing and the writing of others
o Standard spelling
o Consistency and sequence of verb tenses
· Standard ELL Functions
o Language functions at the ELL III level are those functions from ELL I and II levels which need to be reinforced to meet specific needs of students in an ELL III level class.
· ELL Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks in ELL II:
o Predicting
o Previewing
o Using context
o Making and reading graphs
· ELL Reading Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all reading tasks in ELL II:
o Interpreting and analyzing outlines, summaries, discussions
o Reading aloud and presenting orally prepared readings
o Reading independently student and teacher selected reading texts
o Making inferences and drawing conclusions
o Recognizing propaganda techniques
o Identifying various types of points of view
o Identifying resource material for application to real life situations
o Identifying literary elements and figurative language
· ELL Writing Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all writing tasks in ELL II:
o Writing editorials; interviews; journals of various kinds
o Writing business letters
o Writing formal speeches/ presentations
o Writing poetry; short stories
o Writing persuasive essays; response essays: opinion or analysis; comparative and contrast essays
o Completing a research project
· Vocabulary
o Incorporates vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social, and school related topics.
