Course Description
A course of study for non-native speakers of English whose proficiency level is below adopted standards as established by oral and written tests. The course provides for a sequential development of English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Instruction is based on adopted texts and supplementary materials for each skill level.
Course of Study
First Semester
· Standard Conventions of English/Grammar
Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL I and:
o Present, past and future tenses (simple and progressive)
o Questions: yes/no and information
o Pronouns: subject, object, reflexive
o Possessive Adjectives
o Comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs
o Uses of modals in present, past and future contexts
o Commands
o Conjunctions
o Using affixes to change word meaning or form
o Singular/plural noun forms
o Punctuation and capitalization
o Negatives
· Standard ELL Functions
Is capable of functioning successfully in all functions covered in ELL I and:
o Suggesting possibilities
o Stating goals and opinions
o Discussing future plans and past events
o Asking and answering questions
o Comparing past and present
o Comparing three or more things
o Giving advice and making suggestions
o Giving reasons
· ELL Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks covered in ELL I:
o Listening and taking notes from oral presentations
o Reading charts and graphs and explaining in written or oral discourse
o Making/Reading bar, line and pie graphs or charts
o Evaluating information for accuracy
o Interviewing to attain specific information
o Making a story map
· Vocabulary
o Incorporates vocabulary essential to daily life functions, including school and family related vocabulary.
Second Semester
· Standard Conventions of English/Grammar
Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL I and:
o Present and past perfect
o Adjective clauses with who
o Time clauses
o Conditionals
o Noun clauses
o Quoted and reported speech
o Gerunds and infinitives
· Standard ELL Functions
Is capable of functioning successfully in all functions covered in ELL I and:
o Reported speech
o Making and comparing or describing measurements
o Explaining or exploring cause and effect
o Taking notes in charts (KWL and T-charts)
o Evaluating literature to create story maps
o Making predictions
o Using the context to guess meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary
· ELL Strategies
Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks covered in ELL I:
o Classifying
o Analyzing
o Selective reading
o Using context
o Taking notes in a chart
· Vocabulary
o Incorporates vocabulary relevant to countries, weather, school, and self
