Course Description

 

A course of study for non-native speakers of English whose proficiency level is below adopted standards as established by oral and written tests. The course provides for a sequential development of English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Instruction is based on adopted texts and supplementary materials for each skill level.

 

Course of Study

 

·        Standard Conventions of English/Grammar

 Is able to use and understand:

o       Present tense  (including irregular forms of be)

o       “Wh” questions

o       Yes/No questions

o       Subject pronouns

o       Possessive Adjectives

o       Comparative forms of adjectives

o       Present continuous tense

o       Object pronouns

o       Future tense with be going to

o       Simple past tense

o       Future tense with “will”

o       Uses of modals – can/ can’t, could/couldn’t

o       Commands

o       Superlative forms of adjectives

o       Conjunctions

o       Adverbs of manner

·        Standard ELL Functions

 Is capable of functioning successfully in:

o       Introduction of self and others

o       Telling time

o       Expressing likes and dislikes

o       Asking and answering questions about class schedules/school

o       Comparing likes and dislikes

o       Describing daily routines

o       Identifying amounts of money/comparing prices

o       Ordering food

o       Identifying/describing/comparing clothing

o       Giving reasons

o       Identifying/describing weather conditions

o       Locating countries/places on a map

o       Describing places

o       Evaluating

o       Making predictions

o       Describing a sequence of events in the past

o       Guessing

o       Giving instructions

o       Identifying similarities and differences
