5th Grade Science (ELL)

Fifth Grade Science/Health- ELL

SDE Course Code: 0507

MNPS Course Code: SCI0507Y

Course Description:

In a sheltered environment, the fifth grade science curriculum centers on the District’s science standards.  The concepts in the fifth grade are the Earth, Life and Physical sciences, with a special emphasis on investigations and experimentation in each area, as well as appropriate observance of safety guidelines.  Earth Science topics include weather and climate, the Earth-Moon system, the Solar System, geologic forces, changes and cycles, and Earth’s resources.  Life science topics include the study of living things to include the differences in plants and animals, use of the microscope to observe cells, and the ability to distinguish between plant and animals at any level, from cells to organisms.  Physical Science topics include simple machines, light, heat and magnetism. Hands-on-Science curriculum units “Microworlds”, “Floating & Sinking”, “Ecosystems” and “Motion & Design” are to be used to support the 5th grade Science standards. Appropriate use of metric measuring devices and mathematical manipulations are also a major curriculum component.

Course of Study:

  • Life science
    • Know that all organisms are made of one or more cells.
    • Investigate the relationships among organisms in a specific ecosystem.
    • Recognize that organisms are able to change their environment.
    • Realize that plants and animals use food for energy.
    • Recognize the function of specific structures in organisms that allow them to obtain and use energy.
    • Realize that certain characteristics are passed from parent to offspring.
    • Realize that reproduction is necessary for the survival of species.
    • Investigate the life cycles of different organisms.
    • Realize that plants and animals can be grouped according to similarities and difference in their characteristics.
    • Determine that adaptations help organisms to survive in their environments.
    • Realize that fossils show connections between organisms that lived in the past and those that live in the present.
    • Recognize that extinction has occurred in the past and continues today.
    • Compares the relative age of fossils in rock layers.

·        Earth and Space Science

    • Know that objects in space have identifiable characteristics, such as appearance, location, and apparent motion.
    • Investigate the patterns and movement of objects in space.
    • Recognize that atmospheric conditions vary and can be measured.
    • Recognize that landforms and bodies of water affect weather and climate.
    • Recognize the basic features of the water cycle.
    • Investigates and describes the differences between weather and climate.
    • Recognize that the earth’s geological features change.
    • Know that the earth is composed of different layers.
    • Recognize that earth materials have a variety of practical uses.
    • Know the basic characteristics of soils.
    • Realize the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources.

·        Physical Science

    • Investigates the characteristic properties of force and motion.
    • Recognize that gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the earth.
    • Recognize the relationship between force and motion.
    • Recognize that the motion of objects is affected by friction.
    • Recognize that matter has predictable properties and is composed of basic units, some too small to be seen with the naked eye.
    • Recognize conditions that are associated with different states of matter
    • Determines the measurable properties of matter using appropriate metric units.
    • Describes the types of changes that result from interactions of matter.
    • Selects the type of mixture based on its characteristics.
    • Identifies a substance as an acid or a base.
    • Knows that energy exists in many forms.
    • Recognize the characteristics of light energy and sound energy.
    • Recognize the properties and uses of magnets.
    • Recognize the basic concept of electricity.
