Course Description
 

In a sheltered environment, the fifth grade social studies curriculum centers on the study of the history of the United States from the Civil War period into the twentieth century with emphasis on Civil War and Reconstruction into the development of the Industrial United States. There is also emphasis on the emergence of modern America through the Great Depression and World War II. The course concludes with postwar United States into the contemporary United Stares.

Reading:  In addition to the adopted Social Studies text, students will read related stories from the adopted Reading text and from the Essential Literature lists.  Students will also analyze and use information from maps, charts, graphs, and diagrams as well as from supplemental news papers and periodicals.

 

Writing:  Students will utilize writing assignments to clarify and focus their understanding of the subject matter.  Students are expected to write effectively in a variety of situations that can include, but are not limited to, essays, research papers, journals, and text-based questions.
